| Music as a therapeutic tool | THE HINDU: August 20, 2016 |

Music is a potential therapeutic tool and it could help promote wellness, manage stress, enhance memory and communication among autistic children, observed Lakshmi Mohan, music therapist and writer. Music could help improve understanding of verbal commands among children with autism. It also helps improve sitting and waiting tolerance among autism children, most of whom are hyper active, she said speaking at a workshop on Music Therapy for children with autism organised by Pravaag Transitional Centre and School for Children with Autism here on Friday. She handled separate therapy sessions for children with autism, parents and teachers. She presented simple bhajans in different ragas and demonstrated how music could be effectively used to make the children respond positively. The sessions could help the children display better eye contact and attentiveness, she said. K.Geetha, Director, Pravaag, while addressing the parents, said music therapy improved social behaviour, focus, and attention in the children. It also aims to promote body awareness and coordination she added. |
